The four letter word

This four letter word starts with S. This four letter word shuts down our roads. This four letter word shuts down our schools. This four letter words causes people to run to the store for milk, bread and eggs. This four letter word is snow.

On Tuesday afternoon I was on my way home from work when I saw, "it." This was not snow, but the salt and brine they put down on the roads prior to future winter precipitation. I hadn't been watching the news and apparently missed the online edition where they predicted that snow would be coming. So I got online and found out that NC was expecting snow (trace to 1 inch) on THURSDAY night. So Tuesday they were laying down the brine for Thursday night's snow. That makes sooo much sense to spray the roads two days before the expected event instead of the day before such wintry mix. Of course I am a "Lymie." So maybe this is beyond my understanding.

Anyways. This four letter word even mentioned brings our state to a halt. People that move to NC from northern states think that they can drive in our "snow." Multiple times they are proven wrong because our snow isn't the snow they are used to. It's generally a snow mixed with sleet and freezing rain. So the roads are covered.

As of right now, not a drop of snow has been seen in the sky and 70 area schools/day cares/business are delayed for 2 hours. My guess is that we'll all wake up and there will be no precipitation at all. The schools and businesses are in a catch 22 situation. Wait too long and there are complaints. Call it too early and there are complaints. So they do the best they can with the information they have.

So now, I go to bed. I wait until I wake at 5am to discover whether it's snowing or sleeting or nothing. I will scramble to the website to see if my school has delayed or closed (which seeing pigs fly will have a better chance of happening in my particular case) and then if there IS wintry precip ... pucker my way to my job.

I'll believe it when I see it. Of course that's what I said on this day too: (January 20, 2009)
